"The character of Eliza Binks had been quietly bubbling away in my imagination since 2019, but it was during the stillness of lockdown that her world truly took shape. I was drawn to the idea of placing Eliza within real moments from history — moments where courage, curiosity, and compassion could help keep history on course. One early inspiration explored the time of the Black Plague and the survival of the future mother of a king, a reminder that history often hinges on unseen stories.
Born from my love of history, ghost stories, and the magic of Pontefract Castle, Eliza became a brave, curious girl who can step into hidden worlds, solve mysteries, and make friends with the past rather than fear it. Writing Eliza’s adventures allows me to share that same sense of wonder and discovery with young readers — the feeling that first drew me to stories, history, and the power of imagination."
